Every two months when we know what day and time the
magazine is due to arrive from the printers, a phone call goes out to
our 'team' of packers. If you've ever wondered how we get the many thousands
of magazines into envelopes with your individual names on them, packed
and wrapped ready for posting to the many thousands of subscribers and
saddlery stores across Australia, on the same day as the magazine comes
off the presses, then this group is the answer.
These ladies are mostly dedicated horsewomen or have
a family involvement with horses and they live in the immediate neighbourghood-
an advantage when the truck has been delayed or arrives hours earlier
than expected. Most have had a long involvement with the magazine, like
Glynnes, who has been coming along since her daughter Lisa worked for
us in 1998.
The packing process is a bit like an assembly line,
so its a great opportunity to sit and chat about the latest horse happenings
and what everyone has been doing for the past two months, while filling
the plastic bags with a magazine and cover sheet.
After toasting each new issue with chocolate and champagne
(a good incentive to attract helpers) and doing a quick survey of their
thoughts on the cover and articles the ladies leave with the latest copy
under their arm- and they are officially the first readers of each new
issue.
