Equine Semen Users and Importers

25/10/07

Importers and users of horse semen are reminded of the need to follow strict biosecurity procedures when using imported horse semen in Western Australian horses.

Semen must only be sourced and introduced according to the conditions published on the Department of Agriculture and Food's web site (www.agric.wa.gov.au)

The highest risk is that semen containers may be contaminated with equine influenza virus or other unwanted pathogens. It is essential that semen containers are cleaned and disinfected before opening and using the contents.

Failure to follow strict biosecurity procedures may result in the first case of a serious disease occurring in your own horses.
