INFORMATION SESSIONS ON EQUINE INFLUENZA FOR THE REGIONAL COMMUNITIES
The Department of Agriculture and Food, in conjunction with the WA Horse Industry will be hosting a series of public information sessions on equine influenza in regional areas in November.
Department director of animal biosecurity Ashley Mercy said the sessions were aimed at both horse owners and others involved in the industry to provide an update on the management of equine influenza in Western Australia.
“The topics that will be covered include signs of equine influenza, how to prevent the spread of disease, what would happen if EI was detected in WA and what the industry can do to keep EI out of the State,” he said.
“Western Australia currently has strict biosecurity protocols in place for the movement of horses, horse tack and semen into the State.
“However, each person travelling into Western Australia must also take responsibility for ensuring they do not inadvertently bring the virus in.
“This is as simple as showering after being in contact with a horse, disinfecting footwear, horse gear, equipment and vehicles and changing and washing clothing.”
Dr Mercy said horse owners should limit unnecessary contact between their horses, visitors and other horses.
“The Department has also been working closely with the horse industry to ensure all horse event organises have clear and strict biosecurity protocols in place.”
Department district veterinary officers will be presenting at the meetings on the following dates, times and venues.
